What Not To Share With Your Dog This Thanksgiving Dinner

      I am all too excited!

Thanksgiving is just one week away. It is truly my favorite holiday of the year where you get to share food and fun with friends and family without the worry of gift giving. When I say we get to share food with family of course I am speaking of the four legged family members as well.

I have two dogs myself and they are definitely part of our family. However, as you sit down for your wonderful Thanksgiving meal with your beloved animals giving you those sad, please feed me something too, puppy eyes, please keep this in mind.

Many of the foods that we enjoy and eat at Thanksgiving are not meant to be given to our dogs. In fact, many of those foods can cause serious reactions in your dogs. I would hate to see your Thanksgiving ruined because your dog or dogs have become very ill from something you fed them in the name of love!

So, I have compiled a short list of foods that you should not be feeding your dogs in the hope that I can prevent your animals from getting sick from something you gave them.

1- Walnuts/macadamia nuts: These nuts in particular are extremely harmful due to a possible toxic reaction.

2- Undercooked turkey: Just like us, dogs too can get salmonella poisoning from undercooked turkey meat.

3- Turkey bones: The bones can cause puncture wounds, scrapes, or even block the dogs insides.

4- Turkey skin: The skin of the turkey is high in fat and is hard for the dogs to digest which can cause pancreatitis.

5- Grapes and/or raisins: These can both be very toxic to dogs and may lead to kidney failure.

6- Alliums: In case you don't know, alliums are a monocot genus of flowering plants which are informally called the onion genus. So examples of alliums would include onions, chives, garlic, and leeks. Alliums can be toxic in large amounts because they can lead to toxic anemia.

7- Alchohol: This really should be a no brainer. You would not give alcohol to a child that does not know any better and you should not give it to your pets for the same reasons. But, in the event that common sense is not enough, you should not give alcohol to dogs because it can damage your dogs stomach as well as cause intoxication, liver damage, coma, seizures, and possibly even death.

Of course, there are many other items that your dogs should not be eating this Thanksgiving so this short list is by no means all inclusive. Please just be very careful with your dogs. I know that you want to share this special day with your dogs and make it special for them too and you can do so, just not by including the items above in their meals.

Have a fantastic Thanksgiving. However, while you are enjoying yourselves please also think of your pets. One of the biggest things we will do Thanksgiving Day is the big meal. I know that we want to share this with our dogs as well but we do need to still keep in mind and be careful on what we are putting in their dog bowls.
